if.... is a 1968 British drama film produced and directed by Lindsay Anderson satirising English public school life. Famous for its depiction of a savage insurrection at a public school or boarding school, the film is associated with the 1960s counterculture movement because it was filmed by a long-standing cIounter-culture director at the time of the student uprisings in Paris in May 1968. It includes controversial statements, such as: "There's no such thing as a wrong war. Violence and revolution are the only pure acts". It features surrealist sequences throughout the film. Upon release in the UK, it received an X certificate. The film stars Malcolm McDowell in his first screen role and his first appearance as Anderson's "everyman" character Mick Travis. Richard Warwick, Christine Noonan, David Wood, and Robert Swann also star, and Rupert Webster is featured as the young boy Bobby Phillips. if.... won the Palme d'Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. In 2004, the magazine Total Film named it the sixteenth greatest British film of all time. The Criterion Collection released the DVD on 19 June 2007.

150 years of tropical storms mapped

...Hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon - in the Atlantic and northeast Pacific the storms are called hurricanes, in northwest Pacific they are known as typhoons and in the south Pacific the term cyclone is used.
Nelson opted to focus the map on Antarctic partly because he is "sick of boring old rectangular projections".
"Hurricanes are a global phenomena and they skirt the equator, spinning off with the effects of prevailing winds and a rotating earth beneath. It turned out that a South Pole projection did the best job of illustrating that hula-hoop nature. Also I wanted to present it in a way that might inspire a bit of a double take. It looked trippy and did right by the data so I went with it."

GOP Women Party Hard (1941)

“On the evening of May 20,” begins an article in the June 16, 1941, issue of LIFE magazine, “members of the Young Women’s Republican Club of Milford, Conn., explored the pleasures of tobacco, poker, the strip tease and such other masculine enjoyments as had frequently cost them the evening companionship of husbands, sons and brothers.”
Thus the storied weekly and photographer Nina Leen chronicled the shenanigans that erupted when a group of GOP women got together for an old-fashioned “smoker” (noun: an informal social gathering for men only) on one long, memorable night in southern New England.
Meanwhile GOP women of today come out with this crap!

Talking of screws (and other bits of metal)

Nils Frahm - Screws (Free Download)

i am sitting in front of a sheet of paper. my right hand is bending over my left thumb. the first day i got out of my cast i could bend it by 15°. now i am already at 50° and that makes me happy. things are going uphill...
as you can imagine, it is really bad news for a pianist when he gets diagnosed with a broken thumb. that day i was sitting in the emergency room, feeling rather dizzy while thinking of a zillion shows coming up and all the people involved around it. i realised in that moment how busy things have become. it is hard to turn down interesting projects and opportunities, since i surely love my work. it actually never felt like work. playing piano and playing it for wonderful people is the greatest joy i can imagine.
for a couple of days i felt like this all could be over. how pathetic. but hey – also feeling sorry for yourself has its place somewhere. all of a sudden i had so much time, an unexpected holiday. i cancelled most of my schedule and found myself being a little bored. even though my doctor told me not to touch a piano for a while, i just couldn't resist. i started playing a silent song with 4 fingers on my left and the remaining 5 on my right hand. i set up one microphone and recorded another tune every other night before falling asleep.
the day i got rid of my cast i had recorded 9 little tunes. they have helped me feel less annoyed about my accident and reminded me that any good is something i can only achieve, when i am making the most out of what i've got.
thank you all for listening!

Lee Perry on making soul music your church and the curse of 'black magic reggae'

Every single man who say he is a reggae star dead. Whereas you are living. If reggae isn’t a curse, why Bob Marley dead? Why Peter Tosh dead? Why all the Jamaican artists dead? Why are most of the Jamaican producers dead? If reggae was a blessing, they would not be dead. They would be happy, jumping around the place, singing, ‘Oh Lord thank you for saving my soul when reggae wanted my soul,’ and they would dance out of here. They would have them a long life, smoke them cigarettes and get crazy and want to kill somebody, from cigarette curse. Or they shoot somebody from reggae gun curse. Or something like that.

Rhys Chatham on voting Republican

I just wanted to say, that I think musicians are very nice. they are a special bunch, open always, to lovely ideas, perhaps crazy ideas, that bring us.. further.
Unlike the Republicans, their leaders are for the one per cent, the poor working class people who follow them listen only to their their TV idols, who tell them what to think... against their best interests, alas.
Any person who votes Republican and makes under one million dollars per year is voting against her or his best interest, in my view.
Any women who votes for Ryan is not thinking entirely clearly, if she looks at the facts. I mean, just look at what the man believes in, jeez.
And between both of them, is that what we want for the next 8 years? By all means, give the country to the one per cent. They HATE the vote. That's why they lie so much with their PACS.

Turkey: Another woman murdered in Antalya, one more victim in the undeclared war

Via TGEU listserve:

A trans* person (her name is Serap, 29) was murdered early this morning - around 05.00 - in Antalya, Turkey. Her throat was cut. The police came into the scene when she was alive, however she died before she was taken to the hospital. Other trans* from the district came together after she was attacked to see her however (based on the a trans from Antalya said) the police pepper sprayed people who gathered and did not react immediately to take Serap to the hospital.

Hopefully we will have more details in the upcoming days.

As ever, my thoughts go out to Serap’s loved ones and all my trans sisters in Turkey, fighting daily to survive in an undeclared war being waged by their compatriots with the tacit complicity of the state.
